Light microscopes

Every year we will offer an Introduction to Light Microscopy course for new students and anyone else is interested in learning the basics of microscopy. The course will have a theory section with slide presentation (approx. 2-3 hours), followed by a practical section (approx. 1 hour).

In addition, we are available any time for the following training sessions, for individuals or small groups. Contact Fiona or Meredith to arrange a session.

Basic light microscopy course (1 hour)

  • Microscope anatomy
  • Transmitted and reflected light paths
  • Objective lenses
  • Kohler illumination
  • DIC/Phase contrast
  • Widefield fluorescence
  • Microscope care

Basic confocal microscopy course for Zeiss/ Leica microscopes (2 hours)

    • On/off procedure
    • Booking system and guidelines
    • Lasers and HBO use
    • Objective lenses
    • Confocal software (LSM/ LAS AF programs) - configuration, single/ multi-track imaging, dynamic range, Z-stacks, time-series, 3D reconstruction, file storage and data management
    • Confocal care

    Advanced/refresh confocal microscopy course

Tailor-made training according to what the user needs (e.g. if you want to learn more about a specific technique, or if you used a confocal a while ago and you don't feel confident restarting on your own)
